TRAVELLING TO BULGARIA

When travelling to Bulgaria, visa requirements depend on your nationality and the purpose of your visit. Here’s a general overview:

  1. EU/EEA Citizens: Citizens from the EU or European Economic Area countries do not need a visa to enter Bulgaria. They can stay for up to 90 days for tourism or business purposes using just their passport or national ID card.
  2. Non-EU Citizens: It’s essential to check the specific requirements based on your country of citizenship.
  3. Travel Insurance: It’s recommended to have travel insurance that covers health issues, accidents, and other potential travel disruptions.

Currency and card payments

The Bulgarian currency is Leva (BGN).  1 Euro is about 1.95 Leva.

Using Euros for cash payments is NOT accepted.

Payments by card are widely accepted in urban areas, including hotels, restaurants, and shops. Visa and MasterCard are the most commonly accepted cards, while American Express may be less widely accepted.

However, in smaller shops and most of the taxi companies, farmers’ markets, or artisan fairs, cash may be preferred, so having some leva on hand can be useful.

ATMs are available for cash withdrawal, and they typically accept international cards.
